Why European Mattress Sizes Are Different

European mattresses are measured in centimeters, not inches, and the standard sizes don’t line up with American ones however, a “European King” is not the same as a US King, and continental European sizes differ from UK sizes too. That’s why an off-the-shelf US mattress almost never fits a European frame. We build to your exact dimensions, so it fits right the first time.

Use the charts below as a guide. Dimensions can vary slightly by country and manufacturer, so if your frame doesn’t match exactly, that’s no problem. We make mattresses to any measurement.

European King Size Mattress

The European King is the size we’re asked for most. At 160 × 200 cm (about 63″ × 79″), it’s wider than a US Queen but shorter and narrower than a US King which is exactly why a standard American mattress leaves gaps or hangs over. We also make the larger European Super King, sometimes called a Grand King, at 180 × 200 cm (about 71″ × 79″). Both are handmade to your frame in the comfort and material of your choice.

European Double Mattress

The European Double 140 × 200 cm (about 55″ × 79″)  is the standard continental couple’s size, and it’s one of the fastest-growing requests we see from customers with imported or IKEA frames. As with every size, yours is cut and built to spec, not trimmed down from an American mattress.

European Single Mattress

The European Single, 90 × 200 cm (about 35″ × 79″), is a common fit for children’s rooms, guest beds, and IKEA frames. Longer than a US Twin and metric-measured, it rarely matches an off-the-shelf option so we make it to your exact size.

Any Other European Size — Made to Order

European sizing varies across countries, and plenty of frames don’t match any “standard” at all. That’s our specialty. If your measurement isn’t in the charts above, just give us the length and width and we’ll build a mattress to fit it exactly the same way we’ve handled hard-to-find sizes for over 120 years.
